Around our house, we love to read. Well, I do and I pray my children have the same desire to read books as I do. As the famous Dr. Seuss quote says,
“The more that you read,
the more things you will know,
the more that you learn
the more places you’ll go!”

At a very young age I began chapter read alouds for my girls. My oldest, at the age of three, asked to read the Wizard of Oz. It was her favorite movie at the time and on one of our trips to San Diego, we went to brunch at the Del where wrote the Wizard of Oz. There I purchased a classic copy and we proceeded to read the entire book in a few short weeks. Over the years we have read countless chapter books, rereading some so that her younger sister could enjoy them as well.
Now with my three year old and almost two year old, we have started rereading preschool chapter books. Here are a few we are currently enjoying:
We have this in the classical edition which includes beautiful illustrations. We love reading this book at night before bed. This classic story is about a rabbit, named Peter, who is always getting into mischief and being chased from Mr. McGregor’s garden. Peter always returns home to a loving mother that gives him a cup of tea and tucks him into bed before another adventure begins.
This collection of picture books is the perfect predecessor to the classic chapter book series. My three year old calls it her bedtime book. She loves listening to the stories and then repeating it as she sees the story laid out in the beautiful illustrations. I had never seen this editon before, until I went to a local book fair. If you’re local, I recommend checking out the Green Valley Bookfair.
Oh! What a classic! I grew up watching Winnie the Pooh making this book very dear to my heart. We have picked this book up a few times over the last year. However, recently we have become reacquainted with the characters in our picture books. So I foresee this book becoming a repeat bedtime read for the next few weeks:-)
This is a new preschool chapter book that was not out when my oldest was little My nine year old became interested in Mercy Watson when she was in kindergarten. I pulled it out last year to read to my, then, two year old thinking we’d only get a chapter or two read, but she was fascinated and had me finish the book in one sitting! Mercy Watson is a series about a pig, who is raised by the Watsons and treated as a child, only they soon realize she’s not a typical child!
A classic for the ages. This is a lengthy picture book that can be broken down into sections for the little ones whose attention spans are on the shorter side or it can be read all in one sitting. There are a few different ones, so if you’re little one loves the first Madeline, you may want to add this treasury to your home library!
These are great books that you’re preschooler will be reading independently in kindergarten/first grade. They have a great storyline of friendship and are perfect for short reads, as they were created for beginner readers. I love this classic collection treasury the best and we will be adding it to our home library shortly!
Oh, what a bear Paddington Bear is! He loses his family in Africa and proceeds to board a ship that lands in London. He is adopted by a loving family and learns the ends and outs of the British ways. Paddington Bear is a classic chapter book and it has now come out as a movie! Perfect for movie night when you have finished reading this read aloud!
This is a classic picture book that can be read in one sitting or spread out over several if your preschooler’s attention span is short. The story revolves around a young elephant, who after losing his mother goes on to become king of all the elephants. This book has a few different ones written so you can buy the collection book or if you would rather you purchase the books individually, you are able to do that as well.
This book is a great read for elementary aged, but, if like myself, your children are a range of various ages, your preschooler will enjoy listening as well. Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle knows everything there is to know about children and she’s great at problem solving in the most curious of ways that always work and provides lots of laughs!
This book is dear to my heart, it is one of the few books I kept from childhood. I can’t even count how many times I had this book read to me or read it myself. It is now considered a beginner reader book, but when I received it, there really was no such thing, it was simply a storybook. Little Bear has a loving mother and father bear and has lots of adventures with all his animal friends.
